Inner Peace
by
Tom Marcoux, America's Communication Coach
Inner peace is a daily process, similar to guiding a boat to flow with a stream. We use methods like one learns paddling techniques. The following methods have worked for thousands of people.
Here are seven principles to help you enhance your inner peace:
- Say, "That was Chapter One, this is Chapter Two."
- Use a 'SwitchPhrase.'
- Take the Spiritual Path to Wealth
- Have a Gratefulness Ritual
- Do What Makes You Happy
- Consider "I am as Higher Power created me."
- Continually Experience Empowering Ideas and Stories
1. Say, "That was Chapter One; This is Chapter Two"
Inner peace is disrupted by self-doubt. Resolve to learn from each situation. And, remind yourself that the past is NOT today. The past is "Chapter One," and today is "Chapter Two." Something new and different can happen NOW.
For example, years before producing the films, "SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE" and "CONTACT,"
Producer Lynda Obst made an error when talking to her then-employer Peter Guber (producer of BATMAN starring Michael Keaton). She said, "[FLASHDANCE] is the best commercial idea. Take it or I quit because I'm not worth anything around here." Now after years of experience, she would say this powerful phrase: "Peter, for Writer's Guild minimum, I can get you a Bob Fosse musical."
You can let go of your old label of "not confident" in a job interview. When fear comes up, take a deep breath and think: "Okay, I hear you. And now, I'll practice my responses to typical questions. I'll go over my notes that I took upon reviewing the company's web site." Fear is a "preparation signal." Sometimes, I mention to clients, "Fear keeps you on the mountain. It reminds you to prepare." Related to dating again after the breakup of a relationship, replace the thought, "I'm not good at relationships" with "What I learned was..." Remember, you're now in Chapter Two.
2. Use a "SwitchPhrase"
We experience inner peace or inner disruption based on a 'triggering thought.' In traffic, an event occurs: someone cuts you off. A negative triggering thought can be: "That jerk! He had no right to..." STOP. You do have a choice; decide to "reset" the direction of your thoughts and resulting feelings. Use a "SwitchPhrase" like "I could see peace instead of this." If in traffic, substitute, "That jerk!" with "Oh, somebody making an error. I've handled it. We're all okay." A SwitchPhrase can help you stay in "love-mode" - a space of peace and balance.
3. Take the Spiritual Path to Wealth
One spiritual phrase is: "I am here only to be truly helpful." Helping others is truly the spiritual path to wealth. Another spiritual phrase is "I will be healed as I let [Spirit] teach me to heal." A powerful example is the process that Joe Karbo used after he was plagued by creditors. He sought advice from four lawyers and a judge. He learned the ways to set up an appropriate payback schedule and eliminate the harassment that his family had previously endured. He then wrote a book, which sold 100,000 copies - and thereby reduced his debt! The principle here is: "You can discover your target market by learning to solve a problem you have, and then devoting yourself to helping others with similar needs."
4. Have a Gratefulness Ritual.
As you take a bath or shower, you can breathe in and think: "Spirit energizes me." Hold your breath as you silently say, "I'm grateful Spirit energizes me." Finally, breathe out and repeat twice silently, "I'm grateful Spirit energizes me." You can also use this process as you walk to an appointment.
5. Do What Makes You Happy.
A guide for making a decision is to do what makes you happy. Doing what makes you happy may not be the safest thing. You may need coaching, and you may need to work a number of years to rise to the world-class level. Most importantly, you'll feel exhilarated that you are living in line with your design. What can you do that will make you happy?
6. Consider "I am as Higher Power created me."
Imagine that you were created as whole and healed. Imagine that all pain, irritations, and mistakes you've ever made are just distractions from what you truly are (your essence). To experience this deep-knowing of your essence, meditation or quiet mental time is helpful. One method is to relax in a chair, count down from fifty, and when you reach "one" repeat it again and again in your mind. Or you can choose a different focusing word like "love" or a phrase like "I rest in God."
7. Continually Experience Empowering Ideas and Stories
I asked Marcia Wieder, best-selling author of "Making Your Dreams Come TrueŽ" how she made her dream to appear on OPRAH come true. Marcia said, "I told people about my dream....A representative from OPRAH called my friend. The show was about women starting their own businesses, and my friend had the statistics about the seven million women business-owners in America. My friend told the representative about me, and the next day we were on a plane. It was just a process of sharing the dream and letting the magic happen."
To feel inner peace, make sure you hear, read and see the goodness occurring in this world through audio programs, speeches and video programs.
